What Is A Water Heater Status Light?
What Is a water heater status light for? Status lights on residential water heaters have been around for awhile. A water heater status light is a flashing LED light on the gas control valve/thermostat located in the middle front, near the bottom of the water heater. The purpose of the status light is to show the whether or not the water heater is working properly. It will usually indicate ‘normal operation’, but may indicate something else, especially if you’ve unexpectedly run out of hot water.
You might ask, “Why is my status light not flashing and my water heater isn’t working?” Usually, the water heater must have a working pilot light for the status light to be functioning. A status light will continue flashing for a short time after the pilot light goes out.
If your status light isn’t flashing, and your water heater is working normally, that’s OK. It depends on the water heater manufacturer. If it is flashing and you want to know what it means, you may find the list of codes on the gas control valve/thermostat. If the list isn’t there, you’ll find it in the owner’s manual. The color of your status light may be white, blue or red.
If you’re status light is flashing and you do not have an owners manual or you’re unable to determine the cause on your own, be sure to call an experienced water heater company right away.
How Water Heater Status Lights Work
Your water heater’s status light is connected to sensors and circuitry that keep it operating safely and efficiently. Using the information these sensors send, indicates the current state of operation of your water heater. When there’s a problem, such as high-temperature shut-down or faulty temperature sensor, the light will flash the code to indicate it. Restricted airflow, which affects proper combustion in the burner assembly, is another problem the light may indicate. Each one of these issues will produce a different code at the status light. You should be able to find the list of codes on your water heater’s gas control valve or in your water heater’s owner’s manual.
When your water heater is experiencing any issues or displaying a flashing status light, it’s better to have it diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible by a licensed technician in order to prevent any additional problems.
