Step 1- Depending on your water heater model, you will either need to turn off gas or shut down power
- Gas Water Heaters, turn off the gas. To turn off the gas, twist the Gas Control Dial from On to Off.
- Electric Water Heaters, shut off the power at the breaker box to ensure there is no longer power coming into the unit.
Step 2- Turn off water supply
- Twist the incoming water handle clockwise until it stops. If water does not stop, turn off main water valve to the house.
Step 3- Drain your water heater
- Attach a garden hose to your water heater’s drain valve. Run the other end of hose to a lower location where hot or rusty water will not cause harm or damage to people, plants or property. Open the hot side of your faucets to allow air to enter the heater.
